BioPhos is formulated from soft rock phosphates inoculated with fungi and bacteria that convert rock phosphate to a highly plant-available form. The inoculated fungi produces an organic acid that partially acidulates the phosphate rock making the P content more readily available. While BioPhos is predominantly a P fertiliser, it also contributes significant amounts of calcium into the soil system creating a slight liming effect and contains trace amounts of other organic nutrients derived from added fish hydrolysate. BioPhos delivers P more efficiently to the plant therefore reduces environmental degradation through minimization of leaching/runoff.
This product is a cost-effective option, as cartage and spreading costs are potentially lower than superphosphate. This is due to its higher P content of 12.5%, meaning a smaller volume of P is required to apply the same amount if P. Additionally, liming expenses are reduced due to BioPhos having a high calcium content, while superphosphate has an acidifying effect on the soil.
