Our story
BioFert began over 30 years ago with humble, family-driven beginnings and a deep respect for the land. What started as a small effort to reuse natural waste in smarter ways has grown into a leading force in sustainable fertiliser innovation. From those early days, our passion has remained the same: to create a better environment by improving the health of the soil.
As nature changes, so must we—constantly evolving through innovation, technology, and a commitment to doing things better. Whether it’s refining marine-based liquids or enhancing soil biology through advanced nutrient delivery, we continue to push boundaries while staying grounded in purpose. Today, our journey is guided by a simple belief: growth rooted in science.
Moana Power
At the heart of BioFert’s story is Moana Natural—our original marine-based liquid fertiliser that laid the foundation for everything we do. It all began when our founder, Clive Sinclair, was farming pigs near Waiuku and experimenting with sustainable ways to feed them using waste products. He developed a nutrient-rich liquid feed from fish offal.
Realising its greater potential in the soil rather than the plate, Clive shifted focus and spent the next few years refining the formula into a stable, biologically active liquid fertiliser designed to grow healthy, nutrient-dense crops. He developed an internationally patented thermophilic microbial composting technology, unlocking the power of whole filleted fish nutrients.
That innovation became Moana Natural—a core part of our Moana Liquid range. Today, this fish-based formula continues to feed soil biology, boost plant health, and support growers using both organic and conventional methods.
BioActivation
Using BioActivation, BioFert unlocks the power of nature for smarter fertiliser solutions—driven by biology and delivering performance that rivals synthetic alternatives. BioActivation harnesses beneficial microbes and natural fermentation to release nutrients from marine-based organic matter and minerals, converting them into plant-available forms without harsh chemical reactions. Instead of acid treatments, we apply our internationally patented thermophilic composting process—a controlled, high-temperature microbial fermentation that enhances nutrient availability, eliminates pathogens, and enriches the final product with living microbial populations. The result is a high-performance, environmentally responsible fertiliser that drives the full soil–plant–microbe cycle. With sustained nutrient release, healthier soils, and stronger, more resilient plant growth, BioActivated fertilisers deliver science-backed nutrition—naturally.
A better future
We are committed to using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible—supporting Kiwi industries, lowering our carbon footprint, and staying true to nature. Our approach focuses on returning nutrients to the land and working in harmony with the environment to restore what has been taken out.
For example, BioPhos delivers plants highly soluble phosphorus while protecting waterways, eliminating the need for acid in production, and supporting long-term soil health. Just as effective as traditional superphosphate, it doesn’t leach into the environment and offers a more sustainable path for growers and their land.
